How to choose a middle name
Choosing a middle name can feel easier than a first name, because the pressure is lower. It is also a good place to be a bit more traditional or sentimental. Here is how parents tend to go about it.
Try the full name checkerBalance the length and the rhythm
A long first name often sits well with a short middle name, and the other way round. Say the whole name aloud and listen to the rhythm. If it feels like a mouthful, shorten one part.
Use it to honour someone
A middle name is a lovely home for a grandparent’s name, a family surname or a name that means something to you, even if it is not one you would use every day. Because it is rarely used, it can be more traditional than the first name.
Check where the names meet
When one name ends with the sound the next begins with, they can blur together when said fast. A middle name that gives the first name and the surname some space can help.
Check the initials
The three initials will turn up on school bags, kit and email addresses. It takes a moment to check they do not spell something you would rather they did not.
One, two or none
There is no rule. Some babies have two middle names and some have none. It is worth checking that the full name still fits comfortably on the forms and cards you will fill in.
A little game for two
Baby Name Jar is a free daily game for choosing your baby’s name together. You each drop a name in the jar, nobody sees the other’s until you have both added yours, and then the jar opens and you find the names you both love.

Does a middle name have to be a family name?
No. Many parents choose a middle name simply because they love it and it sounds good between the first name and the surname.
Can a baby have two middle names?
Yes. Plenty of babies do. Check that the whole name is easy to say and fits comfortably on the forms you will fill in.
Do we have to choose the middle name before the birth?
No. Many couples settle the first name and choose the middle name once they have met the baby.
